Anthropic, Google, Microsoft & OpenAI announce Executive Director of the Frontier Model Forum

Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI announced Chris Meserole as the inaugural Executive Director of the Frontier Model Forum and launched an AI Safety Fund exceeding $10 million to advance safety research.

Meserole brings extensive experience in technology policy and emerging technology governance from his previous role as Director of the Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology Initiative at the Brookings Institution. His responsibilities include advancing AI safety research, identifying best practices for frontier models, and sharing knowledge with policymakers and academics.

Meserole stated: "The most powerful AI models hold enormous promise for society, but to realize their potential we need to better understand how to safely develop and evaluate them."

The initiative provides funding for independent researchers at academic institutions, research organizations, and startups globally. Contributors include the four founding companies plus the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Eric Schmidt, and Jaan Tallinn.

The fund prioritizes developing new model evaluations and red teaming techniques to test frontier systems for dangerous capabilities. Meridian Institute will administer the fund with guidance from an advisory committee of external experts and industry representatives. A call for proposals was anticipated within months.

The Forum established shared definitions for red teaming as "a structured process for probing AI systems and products for the identification of harmful capabilities, outputs, or infrastructural threats." The organization also developed a responsible disclosure process for sharing vulnerability discoveries and mitigations among frontier AI laboratories.
